With a near perfect record of 11-1, 4 members of the University of Maryland Academic Quiz Team emerged victorious from the high-stakes playing field of 13 of the top national college Quiz Bowl teams at last week's Cardinal Classic XVII tournament at Stanford University in CA. The winning team included Jonathan Magin (SR. from Silver Spring, MD), Charles Meigs (Grad Student from Seal Beach, CA), Chris Ray (SO. from Rockville, MD), and Mike Bentley (SR. from West Chester, PA).
The stunning victory was especially sweet for the Maryland team because the field was the best pre-national championship field of any tournament this year, and featured many top players and teams. Brown University, the University of Chicago, and a hybrid team of Berkeley, Stanford and Florida State players finished tied for second, while other teams attending included the University of Illinois and UCLA.
Maryland's Jonathan Magin, Charles Meigs and Chris Ray were among the top 15 individual scorers of the tournament. The Maryland team has performed well this year, winning every standard-format tournament they have attended, including PARFAIT and Penn Bowl, the invitationals at Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania respectively. On April 12 & April 26, 2008 the team will compete at NAQT and ACF Nationals, the two most prominent national championships in quiz bowl. Though the U. of Maryland has previously finished second at these championships, it has never won either; this year, after its preliminary success, the Maryland team is a strong contender to win one or both championships. On their victory, team member Jonathan Magin said: "We came here expecting to be humbled by such a strong field, and to come out with a win is really wonderful. It shows that our team can be successful against the best teams in the country, and that the University of Maryland will contend for national championships this year."
Quiz Bowl is a trivia game played on teams of four. There are two basic types of questions asked: tossups (typically worth 10 points) and bonuses (worth 30 points). Players answer tossup questions individually and the team works together to answer bonus questions. Questions cover academic areas such as literature, history, science, fine arts, social science, and geography, as well as a small percentage of non-academic content such as sports or pop culture.
